Ventnor ll v. Woodgreen Sat 18th May 2019
By Dave Naish
Woodgreen travelled to the Isle of Wight for the 3rd year running but this time to Ventnor ll at their picturesque sloping ground and with dedication to get 11 players. Stuart away working in Canada all week - getting back Friday and Chaz only flying back from Florida early Saturday morning. WCC welcomed Matt Yeldon
and Richard Cox
for their first games.
Pete won the toss and decided to bat and after losing an early wicket there was good contributions all down the order with the innings built around no.3 Stuart who fell 7 runs short of his first century for the club being 5th man out for 93 off 107 balls with 12 fours. However it was his highest score for the club - beating the 92 against Rowner in 2015. Opener Russell was 2nd out at 51, then Stu and Renners (13) - playing his first game since his knee injury last season - put on 51 for the 3rd wicket. Stu and debutant Matt Yeldon
( 21) added 43 for the 4th wicket, Andy (35 not out) put on 37 for the 5th wicket with Stu before an unbeaten 37 for the 6th wicket between Andy and Rich (12 not out) took the score onto 219 for 5 wickets after 45 overs. Main wicket taker for Ventnor ll was 14 year old Morgan Flood (2 for 33).
Ventnor's reply started briskly with an opening stand of 36 in 8 overs with opener James Cheek (26) the main scorer, a change of bowling brought 3 quick wickets so at 37 for 3 all looked good for further wickets. However as with the WCC innings the home side's was built around their no.3 - Martin Blackman - who did get his 100 - 101 off 99 balls with 13 fours and 1 six. He shared what looked like a match winning stand of 153 runs for the 4th wicket with Souvik Sanyal (55) taking the score onto a near winning score of 190 for 5 with almost 10 overs remaining. However panic set in on Martin's dismissal with wickets falling at regular intervals with 6 wickets for 20 runs in 7.2 overs - 3 in one over from Renners (3 for 66 from 8.4 overs). 9 runs were needed from the last over- 2 leg byes off the 1st ball, a 6 from the 3rd and a bye off the 4th winning by 1 wicket with 2 balls left at 220 for 9.
Other wicket takers were Jason (2 for 29 off 9, 14 in 1st 2 overs), Chaz (2 for 31 from 9) and Pete (1 for 38 off 9).
