Things continued in the usual vain, we lost the toss and were put into bat(a decision the oppo may have lived to regret).
Jon and Laurence opened the batting, the former having made a sufficient sacrifice to the cricket gods as he was dropped second ball.
Jon took full advantage of this and some majestic stroke play followed, ably supported by Laurence at the other end. Jon’s 50 soon followed and then his ton, Laurence continued to play some excellent shots and soon moved on to his half century. Not content with 100, Jon moved on to 150 in a quite incredible display of batting. The first wicket eventually fell after an opening partnership of 246, Laurence contributed a superb 71 and showed us all the reason we signed him this year. Sam wandered into the middle and showed us the typical sedate batting he’s known for…his first 6 balls went dot, 4,4,4,6,1! Sam smashed an unbelievable 48 from 14 which would put most IPL players to shame, but finally tried to smash one ball too many as he was clean bowled. Rich White went into the middle and contributed a valuable 4 runs to our total. We finished on 317 for 2, with Jon ending on 177 not out. A fantastic batting display by our opening three batsmen and one which was a pleasure to watch.
After a wonderful tea, we departed to the field with a good number of us keen to take part in the game and show that we weren’t just there to make up the numbers! Jason N opened the bowling from the Road End, with Timbles making debut his debut in 2012 supporting from the Pavillion End. The early breakthrough came as Jon caught their opening bat in Tim’s second over. Second wicket fell as Jason joined the wickets column after a good catch from our Skipper. The score now 13-2. Rich and Chaz were brought into the attack, but without any great success until an exceptional piece of glove work by Stuart brought about a stumping and gave Chaz his first wicket. Rich grabbed another to join the party, before Chaz grabbed his second in the very next over. Chaz’s wicket made even more amazing as Andy managed to keep hold of the ball and catch one, the batsman doesn’t know how unlucky he is! Rich took another in the following over, after another piece of good glove work from Stuart before Chaz grabbed his third. Sam, Ian, Laurence and Andy joined the attack and despite some tight bowling we were unable to get another breakthrough. A bizarre run out finally gave us our 8th wicket. Fareham & Crofton finished on 111-8. Chaz finished with great figures of 3 for 8.
A fantastic day for WCC, with plenty of records broken in a great day of cricket. A pleasure to watch and even better to be part of.
We’re now 2 from 2 and bring on next week away to Gosport!
The game was to be played at Calmore but due to the recent inclement weather, the match was reversed and was played at Woodgreen. Fantastic effort by Pete and others to ensure we had a pitch to play on. There were a couple of new faces making their league debuts for the club; Laurence Harding (17) was snaffled from Redlynch and considerably reduced the average age of the team. Rich White transferred to the club on the Bosman ruling and brings with him a unique style of banter and athletic prowess. Welcome both.
Ian left off from the previous season and lost the toss. Surprisingly, Calmore decided to have a bat in bright but chilly conditions. Jason Naish had the honour of bowling the first over and was joined by Chaz bowling from the Pavilion end. Chaz quickly found his line and bowled the opener in his first over. Dont go back in May….was ringing in the batsmen’s ears. Jason quickly joined the game, bowling the other opening batsman. 9-2. Despite no further breakthrough’s, few runs were conceded. Sam Parker replaced Chaz and with the evergreen Stuart Nash behind the stumps, tempted the batsman to walk down the wicket. Stu decided to juggle, drop, kick the ball but with quick thinking, he was able to gather his composure and stump the batsman (although a run out would probably be more accurate). 45-3. Rich White replaced Jason and bowled well despite a vicious no-ball, quite rightly penalised by our umpire (Dave Parker). It is probably fair to say that the opposition didn’t kick on as we would have thought. Chaz came back on grabbed 2 quick wickets: a lbw decision and a quick caught and bowled. The silver fox Ian saw his chance for a few wickets, bowled himself and also grabbed a couple of wickets. The fielding performance was very good and this helped to restrict Calmore II to 151-7 after their 45 overs.
Jon and Laurence started our reply and Jon quickly found his timing and mainly only dealt in 4′s. Unfortunately, this did not last as he was given out lbw for 21. 26-1. Rich understandably nervous went in and then went out. Enough said. Sam Parker went into bat and despite a low slow wicket started to find his timing and boundaries. Laurence also started to find his shots and the score increased to 113 when Laurence was also given out lbw scoring 35 in the process. Vice joined Sam but 6 runs later Sam was bowled for a crisp 54. Andy Parker came to the crease. A few cautious overs ensued but then the scoring rate increased and with a 4 and 6 by Vice, Woodgreen ran out winners by 6 wickets after 38.2 overs. 22 points and a good start to the season.
Well at last, the cricket season got under way. A few messages to start. Jason Holderness has decided to retire from cricket. Jason was a great servant to the club and his consistent bowling enabled him to win the annual award several times. All the very best to Jason, Tracey and their children for the future.
Pam Read our Hon. Treasurer is emigrating to Cyprus by the end of the month. Pam has been Treasurer for a countless number of years and clearly we will miss her. A hard act to follow.
Indoor nets have been booked at the Hurn Indoor Cricket Centre, first session is Sunday April 1st 7pm – 9pm. The bowling machine is also booked for the same night….does anyone know whether he’ll be available this year as he’s very consistent?!
It might not feel like the cricket season is upon us, but it will rapidly approach and we want to make sure we hit the ground running this year.

Woodgreen Captain Ian Cousins (left) is presented with the Bennett Shield. Chaz Potts is awarded Man of the Match
The annual trophy game against Godshill was held at Woodgreen. 1.30pm start although Vice’s time keeping was somewhat lacking. Ian lost the toss again and his brother asked Woodgreen to field. Chaz and Dave N started the bowling against Alan and Clive Bealey. Alan hit 10 runs before edging a Chaz delivery and his brother took a one handed slip catch. The dangerous Jason Cooper came to the crease and Dave was quickly replaced by Jason N in the bowling attack. However, before Jason had a chance to bowl, Chaz nicked one back off the seam to hit off peg and Jason was out for a duck. Clive (16) followed quickly afterwards, bowled again by Chaz who ended with cracking figures of 3-16. After that point, wickets fell on a regular basis with only John Bayliss (18) hitting double figures. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers with Ian 2-5 the other pick. So, in 33.2 overs, Godshill were bowled out for 73, to record the lowest total since the annual tournament started in 1985. A fabulous early tea was held (thankyou to Su and Ian) and Gordon S and Laurence Harding opened the batting. Laurence was given out caught behind for 7 and Jason B was stumped by the evergreen Roy Roddison for 9. However, Gordon remained resolute on 29* and with Sam P smashing 24* off 17 balls, Woodgreen won in the 14th over by 8 wickets. The man of the match trophy was handed to Chaz Potts. Well done Woodgreen, great end to a good season.
A BIG thankyou to everyone who helped out at the fete. We made just over £1500 which will help towards the ongoing costs of maintaining the wicket, ground and pavilion. Thankyou.
Last league match of the season. We were already safe from relegation and we were facing a side who had to win, to ensure they stayed in County 4. We loss the toss…..again and were asked to have a bat. Dave N and Jason B opened up the innings. Our innings was a mixture of good shots and mixed opportunities. Jason B 38, Sam P 17 and a late rally by Jason N 35 enabled us to post a reasonable 168-9. After tea, Tim and Jason N opened up the bowling attack. Tim grabbed a wicket when the score was on 33, then Dave grabbed another 2 with the score on 44 and 49. After that, one of their batsman hit form and with some fine shots scored an unbeaten in the 90′s, as Emsworth reached the target in the 41st over. Solid league season, which has kept us in County 4 for next year.
